Whether you’re trail riding, cruising around a city, or touring the country on your bike, motorcycle safety is important. Not observing basic safety procedures like safety inspections can result in serious injuries or worse. That’s why BMW Motorcycles of North Dallas has created this guide to motorcycle safety inspections.

Don’t Rush the Inspection

We understand the temptation to get out and ride as soon as possible, but skipping over or rushing through your pre-ride inspection is a mistake. Budget your time so that you always have enough to get the inspection done properly before you ride. If you plan to ride in the morning, you can perform the inspection the night before so that you’re one step ahead.

Check Your Tires

Make sure that your tire pressure is within the manufacturer’s recommended range using a pressure gauge. You should also be sure to check for other problems like uneven tread wear or puncturing. These kinds of problems often point to deeper underlying issues, so don’t disregard them.

Check Your Fluids

Next, check your fluid levels. Top off your motorcycle’s brake fluid, oil, and coolant when they get low. You should also pay attention to any abnormalities in your motorcycle’s fluids, such as your coolant appearing “milky” or finding metal shavings in your oil. If anything seems amiss, take your bike to a service department.

Other Things to Check

Check to make sure that your motorcycle’s lights are still functioning. Even if you don’t plan to ride at night, you never know when you might need them. You should also make sure that your clutch and brakes are still functioning properly. A malfunction in important parts like these can have deadly consequences, so be very thorough in your inspection.
